When the marketing budget is limited, splitting it across every platform usually means doing all of them badly. Most small businesses are better off starting with one channel, making it profitable, and then expanding.
The two big options are Google Ads and Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram). They work in fundamentally different ways.
The core difference: intent vs discovery
- Google Ads captures demand. Someone types "website developer near me" or "buy office chairs online" — they already know what they want. Your ad appears at the moment of intent.
- Meta Ads creates demand. People scrolling Instagram are not looking for you. Meta's targeting and creative formats put your product in front of people likely to want it, before they search.
Neither is better. They answer different questions.
When to start with Google Ads
Google is usually the right first channel if:
- People already search for what you offer (services, repairs, local businesses, B2B products).
- Your customer has an urgent or specific need.
- You sell something with a high ticket value, where one lead can pay for a month of ads.
- You want leads quickly and can handle calls and enquiries.
Search ads are often more expensive per click, but the clicks come from people who are ready to act.
When to start with Meta Ads
Meta usually wins first if:
- Your product is visual — fashion, food, décor, beauty, travel, lifestyle.
- It is an impulse or low-to-mid price purchase.
- You are launching something new that nobody searches for yet.
- You can produce good short videos and images regularly.
Meta clicks are typically cheaper, but visitors are earlier in their decision, so you need a strong landing page and often a follow-up (retargeting) to convert them.
A quick comparison
| Google Ads | Meta Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Reaches people who are | Actively searching | Scrolling and discovering |
| Best for | Services, B2B, urgent needs | Visual, lifestyle, impulse products |
| Cost per click | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Creative needed | Mostly text | Images and video |
| Speed to first leads | Fast | Fast, but needs testing |
What matters more than the platform
Whichever channel you choose, these decide whether ads make money:
- A focused landing page. Sending paid traffic to your home page wastes it. One page, one offer, one clear action.
- Conversion tracking. Set up the Google tag or Meta Pixel with conversion events before you spend a rupee. Without it, the platform cannot optimise and you cannot judge results.
- A realistic test budget. Give a campaign enough budget and two to four weeks to learn before judging it.
- Fast follow-up. A lead that waits a day for a reply is often gone.
Our recommendation
For most service businesses and B2B companies, start with Google Search Ads. For most consumer products and visual brands, start with Meta. Once the first channel is profitable, add the second — usually as retargeting to people who already visited your site.
